Frequently Asked Questions

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?
Colon hydrotherapy (also called colonics¯) is the gentle infusion of warm filtered water into the colon to cleanse it of accumulated waste, gas, mucous, undigested food and toxins.

How is a Colon Hydrotherapy treatment given?

During a Colon Hydrotherapy session, the client lies fully draped on the treatment table. A disposable sterile speculum is self inserted approximately 2 inches into the rectum. Warm filtered water flows into the colon via a small hose attached to the side of the speculum, while waste is eliminated through a larger evacuation hose attached to the end of the speculum. The waste passes through a viewing tube for observation, then is emptied directly into the sewer system. Because the waste is contained in this closed system there is no mess or odour associated with the process. A series of water fills and releases takes place during the treatment, which lasts approximately 45 minutes. The Colon Hydrotherapist remains in the room throughout the entire procedure, and works with the client on various breathing and massage techniques to enhance the elimination process.

Are Colon Hydrotherapy treatments painful or embarrassing?
No. Treatments are generally free of discomfort although some slight abdominal cramping can occur as the colon contracts to release the water, waste and gas. This cramping is no different from cramping which can occur under normal circumstances when having a bowel movement. As well, the client self inserts and removes the speculum, and remains draped throughout the entire colon hydrotherapy session, so privacy or dignity is never compromised. Any waste that is eliminated is fully contained within the system, ensuring there is no odour or mess associated with the process. Colon Hydrotherapists are also trained professionals who make you feel very comfortable with all aspects of the process.

Are Colon Hydrotherapy treatments safe?

Yes. Modern Colon Hydrotherapy equipment is FDA approved. The water used is purified water which is also temperature controlled and pressure regulated so that the pressure of the water entering the colon can be carefully monitored. Disposable sterile speculums and waste hoses are used at all times and Colon Hydrotherapists follow strict protocols for sterilization of equipment and infection control. Colon Hydrotherapists are also trained to screen for any possible contraindications, and will not perform treatments when a contraindicated condition exists or is suspected.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for having a colon therapy treatment?
Yes. Cleansing protocol using oral cleansing products is recommended for approximately 3-7 days prior to the first treatment. Diet options are also recommended for approximately 1-2 days prior to the first treatment as well (a light diet or juice fasting). Since the protocol is customized according to your individual situation, your therapist will work with you to tailor the pre-cleansing plan accordingly. Treatments can also be done without following this protocol, however pre-cleansing your system and lightening your digestive intake prior to doing the treatments ensures optimal results.

Do I need to see my medical doctor before having Colon Hydrotherapy ?
If you have a serious concern about your health or the appropriateness of Colon Hydrotherapy it is recommended to consult a Doctor or healthcare professional. If you have Diverticulitis, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease, severe hemorrhoids, or rectal or intestinal tumours you would not be a candidate for Colon Hydrotherapy. Professionally administered Colon Hydrotherapy is safe, and if you are free of the above condtions, a medical examination prior to the procedure is generally not necessary.

Are Colon Hydrotherapists Nurses?
No. Colon therapists are highly skilled practitioners with extensive training, and are fully certified by the International Association of Colon Therapists (I-ACT), an association with standards for education, training, guidelines of operation, and certification. Some colon Hydrotherapists may have previous experience in the nursing field, however a nursing degree is not a pre-requisite for the practice of Colon Hydrotherapy.

I've heard that Colon Hydrotherapy washes out the beneficial bacteria in the colon. Is this true?
A proper balance of beneficial or friendly bacteria is essential for optimal health and digestive functioning. Normal bowel flora consists of 85% friendly bacteria and 15% unfriendly bacteria. Due to the effects of prescription drugs, poor diet, stress and other lifestyle factors it is not uncommon for those numbers to be reversed. It is estimated that up to 80% of our immune tissue resides in our intestinal tract as well. Cleansing the colon of the unfriendly bacteria allows the friendly bacteria to thrive, improving our digestive, intestinal, immune and overall health. Oral supplementation of beneficial bacteria (probiotics) following your Colon Hydrotherapy session is always recommended to re-establish the proper flora in your intestinal tract.

Will I lose weight?
While colon hydrotherapy should never be undertaken as a weight loss technique, some clients do experience weight loss as a result of eliminating accumulated waste in the intestinal tract. When the colon is clean and functioning efficiently our digestion, absorption and elimination improves, and metabolism often improves as a result.

I don't suffer from constipation or have problems with bowel movements. Can colon hydrotherapy help me?

Yes. Even people who eat a healthy diet, lead an active lifestyle and eliminate regularly can still benefit from Colon Hydrotherapy. Since food takes between 18-24 hours to move through our digestive tract, if we eat 3 meals per day we should be having 3 bowel movements per day. Even if we are having 3 bowel movements daily we often do not eliminate fully when we do go. It is estimated that people can accumulate between 5-15 pounds of waste material in their colon (in the form of undigested food and toxins) per year. Colon Hydrotherapy is one of the most efficient and effective ways of cleansing the body of accumulated waste, and is very beneficial for improving overall digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Will colon cleansing products I see on the internet do the same thing?

There are a vast number of colon cleansing products being sold on the internet. Although some of these products work well, most Colon Hydrotherapists will agree that colon cleansing is best achieved using a multi faceted approach. Oral cleansing products are beneficial, however using these in conjunction with Colon Hydrotherapy treatments will provide the best cleansing possible. The oral cleansing products will help to soften and loosen accumulated material, while the Colon Hydrotherapy treatments ensure it is effectively eliminated. Your Colon Hydrotherapist will work with you to recommend the necessary pre-cleansing products to help you achieve the cleansing results you desire.

How many Colon Hydrotherapy treatments will I need?
This will vary from person to person, depending on your general colon health and the level of cleansing which you are seeking. For people who have not had Colon Hydrotherapy treatments before, a minimum of 2 or more sessions scheduled within consecutive days is usually recommended. Additional treatments may be recommended for a more thorough cleansing. Your Colon Hydrotherapist will work with you to tailor a plan based on your needs and cleansing goals.

How often should I have Colon Hydrotherapy?
Once undertaken, Colon Hydrotherapy is something which should be done once to twice yearly for maintenance of optimal health. People with digestive challenges may wish to incorporate colon hydrotherapy treatments more regularly if needed. Your Colon Hydrotherapist will work with you to recommend a treatment protocol to suit your specific needs.

How much do treatments cost and are they covered by Alberta Health Care?
The cost for each Colon Hydrotherapy treatment is $120.00 + GST = $126.00. Unfortunately most alternative therapies are not covered by Alberta Health Care, however some employee benefit plans provide limited coverage for certain alternative therapies. Check with your benefits provider, but remember that the cost of good health is priceless!

Where can I find out more information about Colon Hydrotherapy?
Some internet websites contain good information about Colon Hydrotherapy. As with most alternative therapies, Colon Hydrotherapy is controversial and there will be information supporting and negating its benefits. It is important to educate yourself and decide if Colon Hydrotherapy is right for you.
